Children's play area needs a big update but grass area well kept and perfect for football, picnics or flying a kite type activities. Nearby sports complex has facilities.

This is where I grew up as a child. It is effectively a pond. I'm not sure when it was first constructed but in the 50's and early 60's it was was flooded with a mains water supply and used as a skating rink during the winter months. There was ambient lamp lighting dotted around the pond and a there was a small building with changing rooms at the far end. A very popular venue back in its heyday and that's where I learned to skate. As time moved on the winters became too mild for the water to freeze and it gradually lost its magic and people had little or no reason to visit. It was still used as a picnic area in the summer but even that outdated recreation faded away as other interests took over. It is little more than a dog walking area today. The castle itself was always open when I was a kid but now I believe you have to phone and arrange a visit. I could be wrong there but with today's cut backs I can't imagine it being manned full time. As kids we believed there was a ghost inhabited the castle so take care if you do arrange a visit as we were never really sure if he was friendly or not. Just as an addition, I've read other peoples reviews and think there may be some confusion between Claypotts Park and Dawson Park. Both park areas are more or less side by side, perhaps 500 meters apart but Dawson is the much larger park area with football pitches and certainly more space to offer regards the dog walking aspect, it also has a bowling green, tennis courts and public WCs.

Large open park with a load of football pitches in it, small playpark at one end sports centre at the other. Good place to take your dog for a run aswell!

Was a parklife activity with park rangers supervising kids to play with each other and a range of outdoor entertainment. Great time had by all. Going back this week.
